What’s wrong with Belgians?

HAVING THE HONOUR to host the European capital, Belgium is supposed to be an international society. After all, the kingdom is a mix, or better said consists of three layers of different nationalities. Mixed couples should thus be no surprise. However, something made me think recently. Cupid is probably doing some experiments on Belgians.

Consider this. My friend and neighbour, a true Belgian gentleman, dates a Romanian girl. Former colleague of mine, Slovak journalist, moved to Wallonia to live with a Belgian. When I visited Norway, I had a conversation over beer with a Belgian guy, who came there to save his relationship with a Lithuanian girl. Another Erasmus acquaintance from Lithuania lives with a Belgian guy in Leuven. Neighbour’s brother dates Iranian… Long story short, the ratio of half-Belgian to pure Belgian couples I know is just too high.

And so I think – is there something wrong with Belgian guys to deviate eastward? Or is it the Belgian ladies who are avoided for some reason? Maybe there is nothing wrong in the end; and Belgians are just paying tribute to their international reputation. With statues of naked children pissing as the symbol of Brussels, one should expect some openness and deviation after all.
